How Alternative Ranking Works

To maintain fairness and help users find genuinely great products, FindAlternate uses a mathematical ranking algorithm to sort alternatives under each parent software card. Here is how it works under the hood.

Ranking Signals

Unlike basic directories that rank products by whichever developer paid the most, FindAlternate ranks alternatives based on organic community interest. The main signals are:

  • Upvotes (Likes): Worth 5 points each. Upvotes indicate high user satisfaction and value.
  • Bookmarks: Worth 5 points each. Saving an alternate to your profile shows a high intent of utilization.
  • Report Signals: Negative multiplier. If a listing is flagged multiple times for broken links or spam, its ranking score drops significantly during review.
  • Recency Bonus: New submissions get a temporary boost to ensure fresh, exciting new tools get a chance to be seen alongside established giants.

Spam Prevention Policy

We use anti-sybil and vote-weight checking. Multiple votes from recently created accounts, accounts sharing IPs, or scripts are automatically flagged and ignored.
